 Corruption is a widespread issue that affects various aspects of society, including the maritime sector. 



In the context of the sea, corruption can manifest in several ways¹:


  • Bribery and Extortion: Shipping companies may pay bribes to customs officers or port officials to facilitate the movement of goods, avoid delays, or bypass regulations. This can increase the cost of trade and lead to delays.
  • Under-invoicing and Smuggling: Importers may under-declare the value of goods or engage in smuggling activities, depriving governments of revenue and undermining fair trade practices.
  • Corrupt Contracts and Quota Allocation: Government officials may award contracts or allocate fishing quotas based on personal connections or bribes, rather than merit or transparency.

The consequences of corruption in the maritime sector are far-reaching² ³:

  • Economic Losses: Corruption can increase the cost of trade, reduce economic growth, and deter foreign investment.
  • Resource Depletion: Overfishing and unsustainable resource extraction can result from corrupt practices, threatening the livelihoods of coastal communities.
  • Reputational Damage: Corruption scandals can damage a country's reputation, impacting its ability to attract investment and participate in global trade.

To combat corruption in the maritime sector, it's essential to implement robust governance structures, promote transparency, and ensure accountability:

  • Strengthening Maritime Governance: Governments and private players must work together to establish effective governance structures, including transparent procurement systems and anti-corruption measures.
  • Digitization and Electronic Communication: Leveraging technology can reduce opportunities for corruption by minimizing human interaction and increasing transparency.
  • Anti-Corruption Training and Awareness: Educating government officials and industry stakeholders about maritime governance and anti-corruption best practices can help prevent corrupt activities.

New AI tool reveals your body’s true age

Researchers at   Edith Cowan University   (ECU) have recently developed a new way to measure biological age and find out how old you really are, and it might not be what you’d expect.  Whilst we generally measure age as chronological, i.e., how many years since you were born, the researchers have created an AI tool called AlphaSnake, which tracks your body’s age and can be used to help spot people at risk of age-related diseases earlier. The study has been peer-reviewed and achieves 85% accuracy in predicting a person’s age. It found that the difference between a person's predicted and actual age (known as delta age) was associated with age-related health markers, such as cholesterol and blood sugar levels.
